Multiple
Subject Testing Information
1) Subject Matter Competence
Only STEP teacher candidates who have successfully completed subject
matter requirements may assume daily classroom student teaching
and/or internship responsibility. You must demonstrate subject matter
competence in the following manner:
CSET (California Subject Examination for Teachers)
The CSET: Multiple Subject is the only way to verify your subject
knowledge. These are challenging tests for most students and some may
take them several times. Registration bulletins are available in
the STEP main office, as well as online. In order to start the program, half the subtests must be passed.
2) CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test)
All STEP students must have a passing score on the CBEST before
they can assume daily teaching responsibility in their placements.
3) RICA (Reading Instruction Competence Assessment)
The RICA requirement generally applies to candidates who complete
Multiple Subject Teaching Credential or Education Specialist Instruction
Credential programs through accredited California colleges or universities
or via district intern programs. In addition, candidates trained
outside of California and individuals seeking to add a Multiple
Subject Teaching Credential to their existing Single Subject Teaching
Credential may use a passing score on the RICA to fulfill the teaching
of reading methods requirements. In STEP, teacher candidates take the RICA during winter quarter of their master's year after they complete their literacy training.
